Keep Los Banos’ City Treasurer elected by the people.
Here's why:
The City Treasurer is the official responsible for safekeeping and investing Los Banos’ public funds. That office should answer to voters, not to the same Council and staff who are spending those funds support.
Measure V would make the Treasurer appointive. The measure says the Treasurer would be appointed by and serve at the pleasure of the City Council. It also allows the Council to later hand that appointment power to the City Manager. Either way, the person watching the city’s money would no longer be chosen by residents and would not have to live in Los Banos.
In Los Banos, public trust depends on an independent treasurer - one who is a resident and registered voter of the city per CA Government Code § 36502 – the Treasurer should serve at the pleasure of the people.
VOTE NO to be able to elect and recall the City Treasurer.
